Icebreaker games for new-hire onboarding
Good onboarding games put new hires on mixed teams with existing staff, start with something that has no wrong answer, and teach a little about the company along the way. TeamPlay does all three: teams are dealt evenly as people join (and the host can move anyone), the warm-up games score nothing at all, and a custom quiz lets you turn your own company facts into a round.
Start where nobody can be wrong
A new hire's first group activity shouldn't be a test. TeamPlay's warm-up games - Quick Poll, Speed Round Surveys and Icebreaker Roulette - have no right answer and award no points; they exist to get people talking.
Two Truths is the step up: each turn, one person writes three statements about themselves - two true, one false - and the other teams vote on the lie. It's a game, but the real result is that the room learns something true about each new starter.
Teach the company with a custom quiz
Write a short quiz about your company - its history, its products, who sits where - with multiple-choice or true/false questions and images. It plays like any other TeamPlay game, so onboarding facts arrive as a competition rather than a slide.
The Free plan includes one custom game; Pro and Business are unlimited, and Business adds a shared game library so every onboarding host runs the same quiz.
Mix the teams on purpose
Teams are spread evenly as people join. Before starting, the host can move people between teams and rename them, so each team gets a mix of new hires and existing staff rather than a table of strangers.
A lineup to start from
A 30-minute onboarding lineup:
- Speed Round Surveys (~8 min): Rapid "this or that" questions - no points, just a quick read of the room.
- Two Truths (~8 min): Everyone learns three things about the new starters, and the lie is the fun part.
- Icebreaker Roulette (~10 min): Random prompts and a speaking order, so the quietest person gets a turn too.
- Trivia – Head to Head (~10 min): Run it as a custom quiz about your own company.
That is about 36 minutes of play, plus the standings between games.
Questions
Are there onboarding games with no scoring?
Yes. Quick Poll, Speed Round Surveys and Icebreaker Roulette award no points - they exist to get people talking.
Can I make a quiz about our company for new hires?
Yes. Custom games let you write your own multiple-choice or true/false questions, with images, and play them like any built-in game.
Can I choose who is on which team?
Yes. Teams are balanced automatically as people join, and the host can move players between teams and rename teams before the game starts.
