Team games for a company offsite

The best offsite games are team-vs-team, take five to twelve minutes each, and need nothing but the phones people already carry. With TeamPlay, the host puts one laptop on the projector, everyone joins with a room code, and the app splits the room into balanced teams, runs each round on a shared clock and keeps the score - so an hour of games needs no prep beyond picking them.

Why offsite games go wrong

Most offsite games fail for logistics, not content: a printed quiz that someone has to mark, a scoreboard on a flip chart, teams that end up as "everyone from sales" against "everyone from engineering". The host spends the hour refereeing instead of hosting.

TeamPlay takes the refereeing away. Answers are typed on each player's own device and checked automatically, teams are dealt evenly as people join (the host can move anyone), and the scores are kept for every game in the session.

How to shape the hour

Run it in the order a room warms up: a warm-up that gets people talking, a quiz everyone can play, a puzzle that rewards working together, and something social to finish. Between games everyone sees the standings, and the last screen is a podium people photograph.

Day one is the place for icebreakers, the slot after lunch is the place for the fast-paced races, and the end of the last day is the place for the final leaderboard.

What you need on the day

One laptop connected to a screen or projector, wifi or mobile data for the players, and a TeamPlay host account. Players open the join page in any browser, type the room code shown on screen (or scan the QR code) and their name. Nobody installs anything or makes an account.

The Free plan covers up to 15 people. Pro covers 100 and Business 1,000, for an offsite where the whole company plays at once.

A lineup to start from

A lineup that runs in the order a room warms up:

  1. Two Truths (~8 min): Gets people talking about themselves, and you learn something about colleagues from other teams.
  2. Trivia – Head to Head (~10 min): Every team answers the same question at once - a fair, fast start to the scoring.
  3. Logo Zoom (~8 min): A loud, fast race with a big reveal; the final logo pays double.
  4. Rebus Puzzles (~12 min): Rewards teams that think out loud together, with a private team chat on each device.
  5. Survey Says (~10 min): A crowd-pleaser to close on, before the final podium.

That is about 48 minutes of play, plus the standings between games.

Questions

How many people can play at an offsite?

Up to 15 on the Free plan, 100 on Pro and 1,000 on Business. Teams are balanced automatically as people join.

Do players need to download an app?

No. Players join from any phone or laptop browser with the room code or QR code shown on the host's screen.

How long does an offsite game session take?

Most TeamPlay games take 5 to 12 minutes. Four or five games make a comfortable hour including the standings between them.

Can we use our own questions?

Yes. You can write a custom quiz about your company, with multiple-choice or true/false questions and images, and play it alongside the built-in games.
