White Elephant at Work: Rules, Tips and Gift Ideas

· updated · 6 min read

White Elephant is a gift exchange with a twist: you can steal. Everyone brings one wrapped gift, and in turn each person either opens a new one or steals a gift someone has already opened. It turns handing out presents into a game, which is why it's a favourite at office holiday parties. Here's how to run White Elephant at work, with rules, variations and gift ideas.

White Elephant rules: how the game works

  1. Everyone brings one wrapped gift within an agreed budget, unlabelled, and puts it on the pile.
  2. Draw numbers to set the turn order.
  3. Player one opens a gift from the pile and shows it to the room.
  4. Each player after that chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal any gift that has already been opened.
  5. Anyone who is robbed immediately takes another turn: open a new gift or steal a different one.
  6. It ends when every gift is open. Traditionally, player one gets a final chance to swap, since they never got to steal.

Stealing rules that keep it fair

  • Three steals and it's locked. Once a gift has been stolen three times it stays with whoever has it. Without this, one popular gift can go round forever.
  • No instant steal-back. You can't immediately steal back the gift that was just taken from you.
  • One steal per gift per turn, so a chain of steals can't loop.
  • Never your own gift. Nobody should end the game holding the thing they brought.

How many people, and how long?

White Elephant works best with 8 to 30 people; budget about a minute per person plus extra time for steals. For a larger office, split into several groups of 15 to 25 or keep a timer on each turn so it doesn't drag.

Variations

  • Yankee swap or Dirty Santa: other names for the same game, sometimes with slightly different steal limits. Agree the rules before you start.
  • Themed exchange: everything must be under a theme, like "something you'd use at your desk" or "made locally".
  • Mystery-box only: no shaking or feeling gifts before choosing. Good for groups who know each other's wrapping styles.
  • Regift edition: bring something unused from home. Cheaper, and often funnier.

White Elephant gift ideas for the office

  • A board or card game the team can play at lunch
  • A plant that's hard to kill
  • A snack box of treats from your city or region
  • A desk gadget: phone stand, mini fan, cable tidy
  • A good mug with coffee, tea or hot chocolate
  • A cosy blanket or socks for the office in winter

The gifts that get stolen most are useful ones with a bit of fun: think a quality item, not a joke that gets thrown away the next day. For more, see our White Elephant gift ideas for work, sorted by budget.

White Elephant with a remote team

Have everyone buy and wrap a gift at home, then play on a video call: when someone "opens" a gift, the person who bought it unwraps it on camera. Once the game ends, each buyer ships their gift to whoever ended up with it. An app that tracks turns and steals saves a lot of confusion.

Common questions

What's the difference between White Elephant and Secret Santa?

In Secret Santa each person buys for one specific colleague. In White Elephant everyone buys a general gift, and who gets what is decided by the game, including stealing.

What is a good budget for a work White Elephant?

Around $15–30, £10–25 or ₹500–1,000. Everyone should spend roughly the same so no gift is a clear dud.

Play White Elephant online

TeamPlay's White Elephant generator runs the exchange for you. Everyone adds a gift with a line about it and a photo if they like, the app picks a random order, and each person opens a box or steals. It keeps the turn order and the steal limit (three steals locks a gift), runs the final swap round, and nobody ever ends up with the gift they brought. Good for 2 to 40 people, in the room or remote.
